Why Dread Atlas begins with I tre volti della paura
A film with declared sources, doubtful sources, two versions and a monster with a literary history: the ideal case for explaining how the atlas works.
A film as a doorway
We chose a film that opens questions rather than closing them. I tre volti della paura declares three sources and confirms only one; its meaning changes when it crosses the ocean; it features a monster, the Vurdalak, whose lineage passes through a literary hoax. Every atlas page begins this way: with a film, then outward to everything that came before and after it.
